TAKE ACTION ON MLK DAY 2016!

When?   Monday, January 18, 2016 - MLK Day 2016                                                              

Why?     National Day of Service  -  Make a day on service of a day off from school 



The Casady YAC (Youth Active in the Community) and the Casady Service-Learning Program will continue to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and servant leaders from Casady and Heritage Hall (Rivals on the field, Partners in service) who have passed and inspired us with their example: Mr. Larry Bruce, Bennett Hanneman, Mr. Arnel Gil, Dr. Robert Woolsey, Dr. Robbie Johnson, Mrs. Jeannie Rainbolt, Mr. Anthony Shadid, and Mr. Colby Sartin with MLK Day service experiences available to Cyclones, Chargers and the greater Oklahoma City Community.

MLK Day @ the Oklahoma National Memorial and Museum  9:45-4:00 pm.
Advocacy and Research Service:  STEAMS2 Project: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math, Service, and Spirituality

Will I trust my guilt or innocence to science?  Understanding tragedy, hope, resilience, forgiveness and Oklahoma Standard: ?#‎OklahomaStandard?. Participants will be engaged in crime scene forensics science and Hope Trunk reflective art activity

Maximum number of volunteers is 30 due to the lab capacity. We reached our minimum to have a First Person speaker!

Schedule
8:30 a.m.      Bus departs from Bennett Athletic Center after welcome and group picture.
9:00 -9:30     Sign in and turn in waivers.  Welcome, safety instructions, training at Mr. DeWitt-Clark's home by Mr. Brett Crecelius.
9:30 - 4:00    Scope of work: Scraping, repairing, and painting. Replacing soffit and some of the wood siding.  Rebuilding Together will provide needed tools, but volunteers need to bring gloves and paint brushes.  Work day will include snack breaks and lunch delivered on site.  Lunch, water and snacks provided courtesy of Dr. Jon Powell, UD Director.

Homeowner Information:  Ronald DeWitt-Clark is a very nice gentleman who has lived in his home for 50+ years and it has gotten hard for him to keep up with the repairs.

Project facilitated by the Volunteer Coordinators at the Food Bank. Co-Facilitators: MD Service Club, UD Casady YAC and YLOKCasadyChloey B.19. Schedule

Afternoon Shift ONLY.  Arrive 15 minutes before shift starts at 1:30.  Wear comfortable clothing, closed-toe shoes.  Snacks provided by the Food Bank during the break.

1:30           Volunteers gather at Regional Food Bank's Volunteer Center, second Floor. Check in with Mrs. Omelia, Middle School students.  Upper Division students check in with Chloey B.

1:45- 4:00   Pack food at the Volunteer Center. There will be a hunger simulation workshop at the end of the volunteer experience.  The Food Bank provides a break with snacks and water.

Senator Harris Wofford, a YSA Board Member who served as Martin Luther King's lawyer and later led the effort in the US Senate to establish MLK Day as a national day of service, reflects on the importance of making MLK Day "a day on, and not a day off" and extending that service beyond a single day through programs like YSA's Semester of Service in order to truly honor Dr. King's legacy.
