The Metaphor Project

Each spring, Dr. Gerard's senior English seminar studies the conceptual metaphor and cognitive linguistics theory of Dr. George Lakoff and Dr. Mark Turner.

They study the ways in which metaphoric mappings between language and ideas produce knowledge, both individually and culturally. A highlight of the course is the metaphor project that the students conduct with our own Casady second graders.

The seniors create a lesson plan, including poetry readings, discussion, and a craft that demonstrates one of the basic conceptual metaphors they have studied. This year's seniors shared with their second grade classes how poems use personification, image mapping, iconic mapping, and other linguistic devices to engage readers in poetry about animals, seasons, and even popsicles.
