Happy New Year!! Bennett continues to make great progress and we can definitely see the light at the end of this tunnel!! As Adeline says, "The end of his hospital time is in sight!" Yes, Sister, it is! Honestly, it's exciting and frightening at the same time! As hard as it is to have been here for three months, there is a safety net of intense love and care that will be hard to leave.
His counts continue to recover beautifully with numbers that are nearing normal. There are so few times we've ever been able to use that description for him so it's pretty exciting! He hasn't needed any blood products in over a week which is a positive change.
This week the doctors have been making dosing adjustments to mess, especially those he'll continue taking once he's discharged. One of those is nicknamed Tacro and is the anti-rejection med. He will take it daily for several months. Adjustments are also being made to his feeds through his gtube. It is certainly our goal to eventually stop them but the extra calories are helpful for now. His steroid dose should be adjusted in the next few days and it will be interesting to see what happens with his appetite. He's been eating a lot and it would be so great for that trend to continue!
On New Year's Eve, with the help of his nurse, Bennett took his second "first steps"! It wasn't a planned attempt and I am so grateful to have captured it on video. He hasn't been willing to try it again but it was a huge milestone toward the new life ahead of us!
We hope to learn more this week about the short-term and long-term plans for his prosthetic. Since he's feeling better, I'm eager for him to work with one of the physical therapists again. He has so much strength to rebuild!
Please pray for us as we anticipate our return to life outside these walls! We've overcome tremendous hurdles but there are still many ahead of us, especially as we get him mobile again. Thoughts of how to monitor and manage his electrolytes are scary! Additionally, there is still a chance of graft vs. host complications so we pray he avoids that. My stomach is in my throat as I type, but I reassure myself with the knowledge that God hasn't let us down yet!! Miraculous things have happened!
