Casady Community Service-Learning Blog: 100 Day Count Down to IDP 2014

Friday, June 13th marked the 100 day count down to UN IDP (United Nations International Day of Peace). The UN is promoting the People's Right to Peace. Peace one Day is asking people around the world to answer the question Who will you make peace with? and promoting one day of peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

On June 13th, two members of the Casady Peace Team worked on connecting organizations and restaurants to the Casady Peace Week 2014 Initiative. They visited with the Oklahoma Conferences of Churches and offered to facilitate the reflective component of the Interfaith Youth Tour 2014 on 9/21 International Day of Peace. On Disarmament Day, 9/20, the Casady Peace team will join hands with OU, and OCU service clubs to provide a Kids Fair @ Boys and Girls Club @ Memorial Park to raise awareness of the International Day of Peace, the 11 Days of Global Unity, and of OKC as a compassionate city.

On June 13th, the team also started visiting with restaurants at Casady Square and around Boys and Girls Club. More restaurants will be targeted by other members of the peace team with a reply deadline of the first week of July to prepare the first draft of flyer for Peace Week 2014 Activities around Casady and OKC. Restaurants were offered the exclusivity of advertisement in their area of food in exchange for promoting awareness of the International Day of Peace by joining the Recipeace Initiative.

The Peace team awaits replies from managers of a Sushi Restaurant, a Vietnamese Restaurant, a Pizza Place, and a breakfast restaurant. Restauratns will receive a Peace Week 2014 brochure that will feature activities, sponsoring organizations and participating restaurants-bearing a giant Pinwheel for Peace made by Casady High School Cyclones- A budget of $100 was allocated for giant pinwheel making, one per participating restaurant. The goal is to make 11 giant pinwheels.

Paper pinwheels for Peace and Paper Cranes for Peace will be made at Casady School Summer by the Lake camp participants and Boys and Girls Club during the summer as the reflective component of a documentary viewing series of peace films at the Casady Wing.

Casady Service-Learning will also be promoting Monday documentary and pinwheel/cranes for peace activities at the Casady Wing or where requested.
