Casady's participated in St. Baldrick's Day. Fr. Blizzard and Mr. Jeff Bush along with some fourth grade boys (and two dads) had heads shaved to support children's cancer research. It's not too late to donate.

Lower Division faculty member Jeff Bush gathers a group each year to participate in St. Baldrick's Day, which is a fundraiser that supports research for childhood cancers. Participants raise money by having their heads shaved to bring attention to their cause.
Typically, Mr. Bush's group is made up of faculty members and staff, but this year a group of seven fourth graders decided to join the adults to have their heads shaved. Several of these boys have had family members directly affected by cancer and wanted to be a part of a special cause, and the others wanted to support their friends. One fourth grader in particular, Peter FitzSimons' uncle, Jimmy Everest, was a Casady student when he succumbed to the disease in 1992. Jimmy's Concessions on the Casady campus is named as a memorial for this special boy.
Last year Kaylee Moss, now a fifth grader, also participated in St. Baldrick's Day and had her head shaved. Angela Buckelew Coyle, a Casady parent and health reporter with local television station KWTV9 was on campus last week to speak with the fourth grade boys who participated this year. The segment is scheduled to air Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. and Wednesday at noon on KWTV and on Tulsa's channel KOTV6 on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. and Wednesday at noon.

The Casady Fair Trade Chocolate 3rd grade service-learning project teaches students about social justice and environmental stewardship as they learn about fair trade and marketing through interdisciplinary initiatives. Students sell fair trade chocolate and donate proceeds by percentages to charities whose mission, vision, and practices they research before allocating funding. The Fair Trade Chocolate Project was showcased at the National Service-Learning Conference in 2014 in D.C.
Process of the project: Third graders learned about fair trade, chocolate production, marketing strategies, and non-profits mission, vision and purpose. They sell fair trade chocolate for a week and allocate, by % with graphs, the funds to researched non-profits. For the sale of the chocolate, the third graders learn about marketing strategies and create a marketing process. Most years, the marketing for the chocolate sales is done by posters and flyers, but this year, the third graders had an engaging chapel skit.
YOUTH LEAD OKC Celebrated Service in 2014-2015 making an art piece as their creative reflection of activities in its first full year of operations. The meeting took place @ Mercy School Institute. Youth LEAD OKC also made memory jars as Senior Send Off. YLOKC activity included teens of diverse faiths making memories of " IT IS BETTER TOGETHER."

Lower and Upper Divisions raced their horses by grade, and the Middle Division by houses. Races took place during Chapel times. Winners were the Class of 2017 (sophomores in Upper Division), Woolsey House in Middle Division, and the first grade from Lower Division. Thursday was an all-school lunch and rally where the winning horses from each division raced against each other for the top spot of the School and an entry into Saturday's Derby!
Casady Parents' Organization's Inaugural Derby Days was a great success. The committee was thankful to all who participated and joined together to support Casady School for this new event!

The deadline to mail the bookmarks extended to the second week in May. Over 4,000 bookmarks counted on 5/2/2015 and more arriving daily. For each bookmark sent, the Bezos Family Foundation will donate $1—up to $300,000—to Save the Children’s Literacy Boost program in Latin America (Peru), Africa (Mali) and Asia (Nepal).
Save the Children will distribute bookmarks to Literacy Boost students around the world. Funding generated by the Challenge will stock Save the Children’s international book banks in Peru, Mali and Nepal, improve school attendance, reading comprehension and self-confidence.

Why is reading and writing so important? Illiteracy can lead to poverty, low self-esteem and isolation, poor health, unemployment / weak economies, inequality and more. More than 30 million girls are out of school today and children from the poorest 20% of the population are four times more likely to be out of school than their wealthier peers.

Casady School inducted 13 new members to the Cum Laude Society during a ceremony in St. Edward's Chapel. The six seniors and seven juniors were chosen by a nominating committee to be a part of the international honor society. Cum Laude recognizes scholarship and stresses excellence, justice, and honor. Election to membership is limited to no more than 10 percent of the junior class and 20 percent of the senior class.
“The students who were inducted to the Cum Laude Society have demonstrated excellence in their academic work, good character, honor, and integrity in all aspects of their school life,” said Julieta Zesiger, president of the Casady School Chapter of the Cum Laude Society and Chair of the Upper Division Science Department.
The Cum Laude Society is an international academic fraternity with chapters at a number of public and independent schools. The Casady School chapter started in 1961. Each year, the selection committee asks the faculty and current members to nominate students who have demonstrated excellence in their academic work, good character, honor, and integrity in all aspects of their school life. The students chosen bear the respect of the faculty as well as their peers.
New members from the senior class are: Donald Albers, Emily Fogg, Camillo Haller, Jessika Russell, Anna Schuelein, and Kushagra Tiwary. Juniors elected to Cum Laude are: Lily Hahn, Will Harlow, En Yau Lee, Connor Raikar, Fiona Rendon, Allison Tien, and John Zuk. Those from the senior class who were inducted as juniors in 2014 include: Connor Dube', Sydney Gibson, Claire Hendee, Yogaish Khastgir, Steve Li, John Robertson, and Thomas Young. Guest speaker for the celebration was Dr. Nelson Fong '99. Both he and his wife Erin Stone Fong '99 were Cum Laude members when they were at Casady.
Service-Learning donated a few book. The Come and Read with Me Program of the Metropolitan Library Systems donated 500 books for Bodine. The YAC Boost Literacy Team will delivered books to Bodine Elementary in May.

Natalie, Mallory and Gabrielle with Miss Kruse and Mrs Clay took the bookmark challenge and spent 2 hours making bookmarks with children at Boys and Girls Club participating in the Students Rebuild Literacy Project. At the end of the evening 278 bookmarks had been made between YAC meeting time and the two hours with elementary age children from Boys and Girls Club.

GYSD Advocating Healthier Futures
$5 tickets and snacks were available for purchase. Proceeds will educate a girl for a year at Episcopal Bishop McAllister College in Uganda. Goal: $450. No reservations. Tickets sold at the door.
The Global Youth Service Day screening of Girl Rising was attended by 35 participants and collected $303 to send a girl to school at Bishop McAllister College in Uganda.
Rachel C. welcomed participants and made cupcakes, popcorn and punch for sale.
After the movie ended, Rachel invited participants to reflect about the movie on big post-it notes or leave a bookmark for children in Mali, Nepal and Peru.
