I am trying to start a project that helps primarily Elementary students from low socio-economic background as well as those who may additional face a language barrier, and was wondering if you would be willing to sponsor my project in attempts to close the achievement gap in Oklahoma.
This is what I am proposing. Through some research I have found out that the Public School system teaches kids to learn to read up until the 3rd grade. After that they teach kids to read to learn, so those who are behind are one step behind for the rest of their lives.
I personally love books, and I would like to share that love of books. In some ways this proposal can be viewed as a supplementary curriculum. I would like to start with phonetics, then move on to simple bilingual children’s books, whether they are actually bilingual or translated by hand. As students slowly get better by passing through levels based on reading comprehension, move on to harder books the amount of Spanish (the crutch) decreases. I know through myself and my peers students are more motivated when they get something out of it. So I propose a fake money system, for each level a student passes they get a “fictional dollar” (i haven’t come up with a catchy name yet). Once they accumulate a certain amount of dollars they can purchase small gifts from a store; the better the prize, the more dollars it costs. This teaches kids the value of saving and spending their own money as well as giving them incentive to pass reading levels.
Once a certain reading level is reached students will have an opportunity to write their own stories, whether they are fictional or based on their own lives, and I’d like theses students to send their stories in English to our lower division to share with our lower school students, so they know from an early age that there is more out there than just Casady, and maybe in response some of our students will send stories of their own back to these students.
I have contacted the Principles from Bodine, Britton, Cesar Chavez, and Johnson Elementary schools. I thought It would be better to start with schools near us (Casady) and then branch out to encompass schools from the surrounding school districts and then who knows.
The project will commence with the new school year, this pilot year will act as a trial run in hopes of creating a sustainable and reproducible project that can later be implemented on a larger scale. Timeframe wise set up the second week of August around the 11th and weekly meetings starting the first week in September of 2014.
A Senior Chair Feed Back: I think YAC did a good job this year at managing our time better than the previous years I have been at Casady. However, if there is any way at all we can get more meeting times/ planning times that would only help us even more. B-block as we all know is very cramped and short on time and then we end up late to lunch, etc. One thing YAC can improve on though, because were aware of the lack of time, maybe try to plan in advance more. Get big projects set up as early as possible, possibly over the summer, or even a year or so in advance.
The more time to plan things, the better they will turn out and the better the participation from the student body. I know this will require more time, and it will only happen if the people involved in YAC will even care enough to do it next year. It's solely up to the members of the club itself to how much work is happening and how the projects turn out. I think another area that can improve would be chapel announcements. Having one person read the announcements all at once almost always gets people tuned out and not really listening to the announcements.
Instead of reading them all at once and by the same person, split up the announcements and have different people read them, kind of like STUCO does with the daily announcements. I would try not to announce more than three things in a day. Overall though I think YAC had a succesful year and did a pretty good job. Best of luck to you and the club in years to come! Emily F.

We
all wish for a good life. Some people think all they have to do is to believe in
religion. Others think it’s about the achievement of material wealth or social
status. But I believe that a “good life” is one we can feel good about because
of the way we’re living it.
